A HISTORY OF OUR COMPANIES
Mr. Harvey Newell
In 1921, Harvey Newell opened a new paper distribution business named, Jackson Paper Company, in the heart of downtown Jackson, Mississippi. Prior to that time, he had been an associate of Birmingham Paper Company and many other businesses within our industry. He saw the need for a local distributorship in the Jackson area and so Jackson Paper Company was born. At the time, the main focus was on a handful of industrial paper products like paper towels, cups, and toilet paper. As the company grew, his team diversified into fine printing papers, janitorial supplies and equipment.
Since those early days, our product offering and service area have continuously expanded into new markets and industries. We now offer over 50,000 items to a delivery area throughout the entire State of Mississippi, and well into Louisiana and Alabama.
Much of our progress has taken the form of incorporating new distribution centers into our organization. In 1946, after 25 years in business, the branch in Meridian, Mississippi was opened and named Newell Paper Company. Mr. Newell understood the importance of doing business locally and wanted to encourage the relationships between each branch and its customers. This is why each new distribution center took on his own name instead of the original Jackson Paper Co.
Some 22 years later, in 1968, our Columbus branch was opened. The addition of this facility expanded our regular delivery area to include all of Northern Mississippi. Later, in 1985, we were joined by our Hattiesburg distribution center through the acquisition of local Bruce Paper Company. With Newell Paper in Hattiesburg running regular delivery routes throughout the Mississippi Gulf Coast, our corporation could boast of the ability to offer excellent customer service and regular delivery to the whole State.
It was important for our companies, however, to grow where the market would have us. Therefore, we found ourselves expanding beyond our home State. By this time, our original Jackson Paper branch had been regularly serving many parishes in Louisiana for several years. And in 1995, the opening of our location in Demopolis Alabama established our presence as a supplies distributor throughout the region.
Our most recent addition has been the acquisition of Harris Industrial Products and Packaging, which now shares part of our Jackson Paper facility, in Flowood, Mississippi. The team at Harris have long been leaders in their field and we are excited to offer their expertise to our customers.
Throughout the decades, we have constantly added brands to our product offering. Such additions include: laundry and ware-wash chemicals, automated dispensing systems, packaging systems and film, even swimming pool chemicals and supplies. We also have service technicians to provide support for all the equipment we sell.
Our corporation has aligned itself with most of the major manufacturers for each type of product and has an unusually wide product offering that is backed by an outside sales force of over 50 trained and experienced sales people. We now have a fleet of over 40 delivery vehicles and our team maintains an impressive delivery schedule for all of the territories we serve. Today our company, which is owned entirely by its employees as a privately held corporation, covers a market area that includes over 8,000 customers in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.
As a distributor throughout the region, we owe our success to the loyalty of our customers. Our appreciation for that loyalty is the foundation of our belief that we have an obligation, not only to build up our customers, but also to strengthen our community. We understand the importance of our role as a local business. This is why, each year, our corporation funds a separate, non-profit foundation to support the communities in which we operate.
We, the employees of Jackson Newell Paper Companies, are excited about our role in serving our customers and our communities. We are driven to excel in providing superior products and outstanding service. We want to be an ever more important part of your day to day operations. We thank you for your business and your interest in us.
OUR LOGO
Throughout the years, our company has presented itself through a handful of logos and characters. Our two historical characters, Jack Paper and The New Jax Man, actually serve as part of the timeline of our developing product offering. Jackson Paper Company used its Jack Paper image as a way of personifying its product offering as being more than just the fine paper products that most people might have assumed. In August of 1945 the image was printed in the Meridian Star newspaper as a way to introduce the coming of Newell Paper Company to Meridian. One of the articles announced the new business venture in a letter from “Jack” himself.
Later, The New Jax Man was used in print and on product labels as the icon for our private brand of janitorial products. Throughout his career, he has adorned the labels of a variety of cleaning chemicals. His most recent appearance was in 2012 on bottles of our AA&T Truck Wash.
Now, however, all New Jax products bear the more simplified logo. The New Jax name has always been a way of communicating the joint nature of our companies. While we serve a variety of markets, our history and unity are our backbone.
A new development is now taking place in our company. While the longevity of our names has long been important marketing point, we are now excited to be releasing a new logo. The Jackson Newell Paper Companies logo displays a whole new look for our companies. It is not a new name, our companies have carried this legal title for many years, even though we’ve done business under separate banners. It is, however, a new way of displaying the unity and renewed organizational efficiency that we’ve been working so hard to achieve over the last several years.
The more modern look and feel of this new image is intended to express our desire to be your partner well into the future. We strive to be an indispensable part of your supply chain. Our thousands of products for cleaning, packaging, maintaining and promoting your business are here to add ease and efficiency to your work, and to that of your team.
